{"id":8919,"date":"2023-11-19T18:19:47","date_gmt":"2023-11-19T18:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adopteerregenwoud.nl\/?p=8919"},"modified":"2023-11-19T18:20:54","modified_gmt":"2023-11-19T18:20:54","slug":"the-most-special-sighting-in-our-reservation-so-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/the-most-special-sighting-in-our-reservation-so-far\/","title":{"rendered":"The most special sighting in our reservation so far!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">In recent years we have already seen many rare and unusual animals in our reserve such as the Northern Nacked-tailed Armadillo, Black-and-White Hawk-Eagle and several felines. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">However, what we recently encountered is many times more interesting to scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">In 1989, Epigomphus houghtoni, the Limon Knobtail, a dragonfly species was described by Stephen Brooks based on one male specimen caught in Siquirres, near our reserve in Costa Rica. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The species was never observed again after that. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Knobtails are difficult to inventory because they hide in dark wooded forest streams. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Student Valentine found a male and female along a small stream at the Adopt Rainforest reserve. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\"><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">When<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">we<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">studied<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">and<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">identified<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">the<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">animals<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">carefully<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">,<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">alarm<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">bells<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">started<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">ringing<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">After contacting two American professors who specialize in dragonflies and damselflies of Costa Rica, the only known specimen, included in the collection of the British Museum in London, turned out to be lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\"><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">Thanks<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">to<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">Valentine<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">&#8216;<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">s<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">keen<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">eyes<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">,<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">we<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">now<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">have<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">the<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">only<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">known<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">specimens<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">in<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">the<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">world<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">in<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">our<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">reserve<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">!<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Never before has anyone seen a female Limon Knobtail. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Soon we will be visited by a specialist, who can describe the female and take good pictures of both specimens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\"><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">What<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">a<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">wonderful<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">find<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">!<\/span> <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">How long will it be until we find a totally new species?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adopteerregenwoud.nl\/nieuws\/\">More news about the foundation<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In recent years we have already seen many rare and unusual animals in our reserve such as the Northern Nacked-tailed Armadillo, Black-and-White Hawk-Eagle and several felines.
