{"id":8923,"date":"2023-11-19T18:24:59","date_gmt":"2023-11-19T18:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adopteerregenwoud.nl\/?p=8923"},"modified":"2025-12-04T13:47:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T13:47:16","slug":"the-ceiba-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/the-ceiba-tree\/","title":{"rendered":"The ceiba tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The Ceiba tree, also called kapok tree, is an impressive sight with its trunk full of thorns and a growth rate of 2 to 4 meters per year. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Those thorns allow the tree to protect itself from all kinds of animals. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The tree is one of the forest giants of the tropical rainforest and grows up to 70 meters tall. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The thickest Ceiba tree ever measured is in Brazil with a circumference of more than 30 meters. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The tree rises so high above the rest of the rainforest that its branches provide another habitat for a variety of plants that need more sunlight. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">In commercial coffee and cocoa plantations, the Ceiba is used to create shade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"button primary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/adopt-rainforest\/\">Help to protect the Ceiba tree!<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Use<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8764 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Kapokboom-162x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Kapokboom-162x300.jpg 162w, https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Kapokboom-552x1024.jpg 552w, https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Kapokboom.jpg 647w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 162px) 100vw, 162px\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Moreover, the tree has quite a history, as it has existed since before the continental drift so we can find it from Mexico to South America, as well as in West Africa and pieces of Asia. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The tree has branches only at the top, where they spread out like an umbrella. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">During the flowering season, moths and bats are attracted to its abundant nectar production. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">For example, the tree makes up to 10 liters of nectar per night! <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">In Cambodia, they have manipulated the tree so that it has low branches and a smooth trunk. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">They use the fibers in the fruit, also called silk cotton, as padding for mattresses, pillows and life jackets, among other things. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The bark, leaves and stems are also used medicinally to treat acne, rashes, toothaches, rheumatism and burns. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Western science is also beginning to show interest in the tree and research its medicinal properties. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\"><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">In<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">addition<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">,<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">the<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">seeds<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">can<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">be<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">used<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">as<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">a<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">biofuel<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Spiritual value<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Not surprisingly, people throughout the ages have looked at this tree with admiration. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">For the Maya, for example, this tree was of great spiritual value, you can find the &#8216;ya&#8217;ax&#8217;che&#8217; in many Maya artworks. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">For the Maya, this tree was the connection between the 3 levels: the underworld, our world and the different levels of heaven. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Even more, they believed that the tree held up the sky with its branches. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The tree was also a good indicator of favorable habitat, since they only grow near good water sources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The indigenous inhabitants of Costa Rica also place great spiritual value on this tree. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Unfortunately, this is much less well documented. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">But the story goes that they placed their loved ones who had recently died at the base of the tree by the roots, offering the soul a stairway to heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8762 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ceiba_Tree-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ceiba_Tree-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ceiba_Tree-768x603.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Ceiba_Tree.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In the reserve<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Also in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/the-reserve\/\">the reserve of Adopt Rainforest<\/a> are some enormous Ceiba trees. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Any tourist or student who comes into contact with a Ceiba tree for the first time is silent for a few seconds and stands staring upward in wonder. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">But even for the guides, it remains a magical moment to encounter such an impressive forest giant in the middle of the jungle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\"> The thickest Ceiba in Costa Rica has a circumference of 22.55 m and is called Arbol de la Paz, the tree of peace. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\"><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">It<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">stands<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">in<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">Volcan<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">Tenorio<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">National<\/span> <span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\"><span class=\"--l --r popup_anchor_highlight__with_key_targetContextEditing\">P<\/span>ark<\/span><span class=\"--l --r hover:bg-[#B4DAE8]\">.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>More news from the rainforest? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/news\/\">Click here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ceiba tree, also called kapok tree, is an impressive sight with its trunk full of thorns and a growth rate of 2 to 4 meters per year.
