Rainforest&#8217;s reserve through the purchase of 48.5 acres of land. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">This parcel is very important because it forms a land bridge between the foundation&#8217;s current reserve and Barbilla National Park. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Much of the new plot is existing forest, but there are also several acres of pasture land. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">To make the connecting zone even more attractive to animal species from the Barbilla National Park, we are going to reforest these pastures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9674 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Barbilla-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Barbilla-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Barbilla.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Jaguar Tree<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Locals call the recently acquired area \u201cPalo Tigre.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">This means \u201cJaguar tree.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">In fact, on this plot there is a tree with several jaguar markings on the trunk. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">How cool: This tree is used as a scratching post by the Jaguar!<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Cooperation with the local government<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9679 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adoptrainforest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/SINAC_WWN_CCT-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Quite soon after purchasing the new plot, we were approached by the Costa Rican government (SINAC). <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">They needed to plant 10,000 trees to compensate for the widening of the highway between San Jos\u00e9 and Limon. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Palo Tigre would be a perfect location to carry out this project. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The foundation regularly has good contact with SINAC for different conservation initiatives. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Thus, our good rapport created a new collaboration. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The Costa Rican government, together with the coordinating party CCT ( Tropical Science Center) and the local team from the Indian reservation that we trained last year will plant the trees. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">This will provide additional employment again this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Planting trees with a scientific design<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Professor Edwin Pos of Utrecht University also heard of the plan to plant trees, and suggested that it be done according to a specific research design, w<\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">ith the goal of studying ecological succession in tropical forests. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">The effects of density and diversity on tree growth and interaction will be examined. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">This information will help to decide with how many trees of which species the most natural and diverse forest is generetad, and thus how to make reforestation projects in the tropics successful in the most efficient and effective way possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Why is this research needed?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">A deforested area, if left completely alone, eventually becomes forest by itself, however, this takes an incredibly long time because of the often present stiff grass where tree seeds have difficulty germinating. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Planting trees accelerates this process, but purchasing and planting trees is costly. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Also, large quantities of native tree species for planting are not always available. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Experts believe that if areas are partially planted, the empty spaces in between will develop naturally, ultimately creating a more diverse forest for less money. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Win-win, in other words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">What we ultimately want to know is how many trees of which species we can best plant, and how big the empty spaces should be to get the best effect. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">Professor Edwin Pos of Utrecht University has devised an innovative experimental research design where this can be figured out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"--l --r Park, but also an opportunity for scientific research. <\/span><span class=\"--l --r sentence_highlight\">It also provides additional local involvement and employment and we are working with various
